Abstract

PURPOSE: To separate the titled substance in high purity and yield, by reacting a phenol with glycyclic acid in an aqueous alkaline medium, acidifying the reaction product solution, and extracting the titled substance with an organic solvent.
CONSTITUTION: Phenol, 2-chlorophenol or 2-methoxyphenol is reacted with glyoxylic acid in an aqueous alkaline medium, to prepare compounds expressed by formulas I, II and III [X is H, Cl or OCH3; Y is CH(OH)COOH]. A resultant solution containing those is acidified with sulfuric, hydrochloric, phosphoric acid, etc., and extracted with an organic solvent, e.g. ethyl ether or methyl isobutyl ketone, to give the compounds of formulas I, II, and III. When X is H, pH is preferably adjusted to 2W5. When X is Cl, pH is adjusted to 2.5W5.5, and when X is OCH3, pH is adjusted to 1.5W4. The recrystallization with water may give the aimed compound of higher purity.
