Abstract

PURPOSE: To elongate the life of a catalyst and to improve the yield of the tertiary olefin without using expensive reagents in the preparation of the titled compound from an alkyl tertiary-alkyl ether using a metal sulfate catalyst, by adding water and/or a tertiary alcohol to the reaction system.
CONSTITUTION: Water and/or a tertiary alcohol, pref. 4W8C tertiary alcohol, are added to the reaction system for the preparation of a tertiary olefin from an alkyl tertiary-alkyl ether, e.g. ethyl tertiary-butyl ether, etc. using a metal sulfate catalyst. The amount of the additive is usually 0.1W20wt%, preferably 0.2W 10wt% of the charged alkyl tertiary-alkyl ether. The reaction is carried out usually at 100W400°C, preferably at 150W300°C, under the pressure of usually between normal pressure and 20kg/cm2-G, preferably between normal pressure and 10kg/cm2-G.
