Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound useful as analgesics, antiphlogistics, and antipyretics, in a simple process in high yield, by carboxylating a novel indene derivative with CO in the presence of a hydroxy compound, including carboxylation.
CONSTITUTION: A novel indene derivative of formula I: (R is cycloalkyl group; X is halogen), e.g. 5-chloro-6-cyclohexylindene, is reacted with CO in the presence of a hydroxy compound, e.g. water, of the formula R'OH (R' is H, alkyl, or aralkyl group) to give the objective compound of formula II, e.g. 5-cyclohexyl-6-chloroindan-1-carboxylic acid. The indene derivative of formula I is reacted with a mixture of CO and H2 to form indene-1-carboaldehyde of formula III, which is then oxidized to afford the compound of formula II wherein R' is H.
