Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce the titled composite body excellent in hardness, oxidation resistance and mechanical strength by a method wherein cubic boron nitride coated with NiP and a metallic carbide both in powdery form are mixed with each other and the mixture is sintered at high pressure and high temperature.
CONSTITUTION: The powdery cubic boron nitride high in hardness and oxidation resistance is coated by electroless plating process with a nickel-phosphorus alloy having a melting point of not higher than 1,400°C, the ratio of the alloy to the boron nitride being 5W30wt% to 70W95wt%. To 40W90wt% of the NiP-coated cubic boron nitride is mixed with hard carbide such as WC in 60W10wt%. The mixture is contained in a container, which is placed in a high-temperature and high- pressure generating chamber and the mixture is sintered at a temperature of 1,200W 1,700°C and at a pressure of 40,000W60,000kg/cm2. The NiP is melted to serve as a binding agent for the particles of the boron nitride and the carbide, obtaining the composite agglomerated body excellent in hardness, oxidation resistance and mechanical strength.
