Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain continuously uniform electric charging characteristics and to improve safety by bringing a plurality of contact chargers into contact with a phtoreceptor and by applying a DC voltage and AC voltage superposed from a feeding means. CONSTITUTION:Charging device 11 has a plurality of contact chargers, namely, the 1st-3rd charging rollers 20-22, equal in diameter, made of conductive foamed urethane rubber, etc., which come into contact with the circumferential wall of photoreceptor 4 over rotation in the rotating direction to some contact width and is coupled with driving mechanism 25 to rotate in the same direction. Those charging rollers 20-22 are applied from feeding means 24 with a voltage obtained by superposing an AC voltage, whose peak-to-peak value is not greater than about 20%, upon a DC voltage. Consequently, continuous charging can be performed securely and uniformly without damaging the photoreceptor.
