Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a uniformly charged surface with a desired potential by charging the surface of an object body of electrostatic charging to a surface potential V1 and bringing a conductive member which has a surface potential V2 into contact while ¦V1-V2¦>¦VTH¦ where VTH is the charge movement start potential difference of the object body. CONSTITUTION:A photosensitive drum 1 is rubbed against a frictional electrostatic charging roller 4 which is driven in a rotating process in the opposite direction from the drum 1 and its surface is charged electrostatically to a negative surface potential V1. Then the conductive rubber roller 3 which has the surface potential V2 satisfying ¦V1-V2¦>VTH¦ when VTH is the charge movement start potential difference of the drum 1 is brought into contact and the difference between the surface potential V1 of the drum 1 and the surface potential V2 of the conductive rubber roller 2 exceeds the charge movement start potential difference VTH of the in-use photosensitive body to the overall lengthwise size of the photosensitive drum 1; and the surface potential V of the drum 1 is held at a desired potential entirely on the drum 1 lengthwise to obtain the uniform charged surface, thereby performing electrostatic discharging.
