Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compounds which are useful as intermediates for medicines and agricultural chemicals, directly and efficiently, by the direct reduction of specific 4-hydroxymandelic acids without substituting the hydroxyl group of the benzene nucleus.
CONSTITUTION: 4-Hydroxyphenylacetic acids of formula II are obtained by the reduction of 4-hydroxymandelic acids of formula I (R is H, halogen, lower alkyl, lower alkenyl, lower alkoxyl, etc.). The reduction is pref. catalytic hydrogenation using a nickel catalyst, such as Raney nickel, etc. and water, acetone, etc. as a solvent. In addition, crystalline 4-hydroxymandelic acids of the formula II, which are obtained in high purity in a short time by reacting phenols of formula III and glyoxylic acid in an aqueous medium at 40W100°C, preferably 60W90°C, usually in the presence of an alkali, are used as the raw material described above.
