Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve productivity in addition to the performance of an array type ultrasonic probe by providing an acoustic lens on the wave transmitting surface of each vibrating element. CONSTITUTION:On the wave transmitting surface of each vibrating element of an array type ultrasonic probe, convex acoustic lens body 3 is provided with acoustic matching layer 13 interposed. This lens body 3 is made of synthetic resin such as acrylic resin with a higher propagation speed than that in an ultrasonic propagation medium. As a result, an ultrasonic wave is radiated strongly not only in the thickness direction of the element but also in the width direction through the action of lens body 3. Further, a substance with a lower propagation speed than that in the ultrasonic propagation medium is used as the lens body and even if it is formed in the concave shape, the same action is obtained to realize non-directional output characteristics of an ultrasonic wave; and consequently the performace is improved and its manufacture process becomes simple, improving productivity.
