Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound by the thermal dehydration of hexose and oligo- or polysaccharide containing hexose, in an OH-containing organic solvent mixed with water, in the presence of an acid catalyst, comprising sulfuric acid or an organic acid having sulfonic groups as chief components.
CONSTITUTION: Hexose and oligo- or polysachccharide containing hexose, e.g. glucose, sucrose, or starch, is heated and dehydrated, in a mixture of an OH-containing organic solvent, e.g. methanol or ethylene glycol, with water, in the presence of sulfuric acid or an organic acid having sulfonic groups, e.g. paratoluenesulfonic acid, as an acid catalyst, to obtain levulinic acid. The concentration of the raw material is preferably 5W50wt% in the reaction solution. The lower the concentration, the higher the selectivity of the object compound and the more stable the formed compound.
EFFECT: Extraordinarily high yield.
