Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare poly-vinylphenol in high yield with single stage reaction, by the thermal dehydration and polymerization of hydroxyphenylmethyl carbinol.
CONSTITUTION: 100pts.wt. of a hydroxyphenylmethyl carbinol such as p-hydroxyphenylmethyl carbinol is added with pref. 0.001W1pt.wt. of an acid such as sulfuric acid and heated at 100W250°C. Or the above hydroxyphenylmethyl carbinol is heated in the absence of an acid at pref. 150W300°C. The dehydration and polymerization reaction is carried out by raising the temperature slowly, for 1W5hr under a reaction pressure of 0.5W5kg/cm2, in an inert gas atmosphere such as an N2 atmosphere or in the presence of a solvent such as methanol, to obtain the objective poly-vinylphenol.
