Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide superior glass cutting properties to a cheap material, WC-base sintered hard alloy contg. iron group metals by adding a restricted amt. of VC to the alloy and specifying the average diameter of the WC particles.
CONSTITUTION: An alloy consisting of, by wt., VC as a hard phase-forming component 0.1W3.0%, one or more kinds of the iron group metals as binding phase- forming components 5W20%, and the balance WC as a hard phase-forming component and inevitable impurities. To the alloy may be added 0.7W9.5% of one or more kinds of the carbides of the IVa, Va and VIa group metals as hard phase- forming components. The average diameter of the WC particles is regulated to 0.3W 3.0μm. This raw material is mixed, pulverized, press-molded, and sintered. By this alloy compsn. and the restricted WC grain size, desired wear resistance is assured, and this alloy is superior to a diamond cutting edge in cutting life time. The compsn. can be varied to make the resulting alloy optimum for various glass qualities, and an arbitrary edge form can be adopted.
