Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent fuel waste and starting deterioration by the method wherein an under-piston pump is operated in the low load region where scavenging efficiency is bad and it is not used in the high load region where scavenging efficiency is good.
CONSTITUTION: In an under-piston pump, with the upward movement of piston 12, air is supplied from common air storage 1 to piston lower chamber 3 via check valve 8 and No.1 scavenging chamber 2; and in the downward stroke of piston 12, it is compressed and sent to scavenging chamber 4 via check valve 9. Here, when piston 12 descends to the point at which it opens scavenging port 5, cmpressed scavenging air is sent to cylinder 6 via port 5. Butterfly type switching valve 11 is provided between common air storage 1 and No.2 scavenging chamber 4, and in the low load region where scavenging efficiency is bad, the under-piston pump is operated by closing this switching valve 11. Switching valve 11 is properly operated by cylinder 16 via a linking mechanism.
