Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the fuel cost and the output of an engine by changing the compression ratio in accordance with the operational state of the engine.
CONSTITUTION: For a high-speed or a low load state of operation of an engine, since oil pressure is supplied into an oil cylinder 42 to hold a plunger 44 fixedly at a projected position, an auxiliary piston 32 is also held fixedly at a lower position without reference to the stroke of the engine for obtaining a comparatively high compression ratio. For a low-speed or a high load state, since the oil pressure in the cylinder 42 is discharged to make the plunger 44 displaceable by sliding, the auxiliary piston 32 is pushed upward by the pressure generated in a combustion chamber 18 in a compressive or an explosive stroke of the engine, and the capacity of the combustion chamber is essentially increased for obtaining a comparatively low compression ratio.
