Abstract
PURPOSE: To improve combustion efficiency of an internal combustion engine, by providing an auxiliary cylinder having an enlarged inner sectional area between main cylinder portion and the cylinder head, together with auxiliary pistons for compressing the inner space of said auxiliary cylinder.
CONSTITUTION: A pair of sector members 4, 4 functioning as auxiliary pistons are pivotally supported at inner cylinder wall portions 2a, 2b of auxiliary cylinder 2. When main piston 3 is depressed downward to the inner space of auxiliary cylinder 2, a sufficient depression force is acted to main piston 3 until it comes near to the lower dead point since decrease in the total volume of the two cylinders 1, 2 caused with downward movement of piston 3 is reduced and expansion rate of combustion gas also caused with downward movement of main piston 3 is small. Further, since auxiliary cylinder portion 2 has a sufficiently large inner sectional area so that explosion is caused if the stroke length of pistion 3 is increased, combustion efficiency of the engine can be improved. Further, since mixture in auxiliary cylinder 2 is compressed by main piston 3 almost at the final stage of compression stroke, it is enabled to prevent occurrence of knocking.
