Abstract

PURPOSE: To lower fuel consumtion at the time of low-load and medium-load operation of the engine, by providing a solenoid for holding an intake valve in a port for supplying mixture into a combustion chamber.
CONSTITUTION: The first intake valve 14 is opened during the suction stroke for drawing mixture from a mixture forming means 50 into the combustion chamber 10. By the solenoid 40, a rod 38 urges a rocker arm 36 in a valve opening direction. During low-load operation of engine, mixture supplied into the combustion chamber 10 flows back into an intake port 12 and an intake manifold 52 via the second intake a valve 18 which is kept open until the end of the compression stroke, so that a low output is produced by combustion of a small amount of mixture left in the combustion chamber 10 to meet with the load. Thus, since no throttle valve is provided in the gaseous mixture forming means 50, pumping loss is not caused during the suction stroke, so that fuel consumption can be lowered resultantly.
