CONSTITUTION: An internal combustion engine includes a cylinder head 2 involving an intake port 3 and exhaust port 4, a piston 5 reciprocating in a cylinder block 1, and a combustion chamber 6 whose volume is set to have the compression ratio 9.5 or more with a piston 5 at TDC. An expansion room 10 with a volume Vn is formed in the cylinder head 2 in communication with a combustion chamber 6. A constantly closed valve 12 loaded by a spring 11 is equipped at the opening of the expansion room 10 to allow communication with the combustion chamber 6. When section negative pressure in an intake manifold 7 rises over a certain value, the valve 12 is opened by a cam 13 turned by a driving mechanism 15.
