Abstract
PURPOSE:To reduce losses owing to reflection and perform coupling of semiconductor light emitting elements with high efficiency by forming the side of a lens receiving output light to plane. CONSTITUTION:A fitting hole 6a is etched to the central part of the end face of an optical fiber 6 with its optical axis 7 as a center. Here, an etching solution of the etching rate for the material of the core part of the fiber 6 faster than that for the material of the clad part is used. A lens body 7 composed of a glass ball of a refractive index about 2.2 is fitted and bonded into this hole 6a by means of an adhesive agent 8 such as transparent epoxy resin of a refractive index about 1.5. After this has set, the fiber 6 is perpendicularly held and part of the glas ball is polished to form a flat surface. Since this results in the alighment of the lend body to the optical axis of the optical fiber with high accuracy and the reduced coupling losses owing to reflection at the end face, the optical fiber may be coupled to a semiconductor light emitting element at high accuracy.
