Abstract

PURPOSE:To couple light easily in high efficiency by such constitution wherein the leading end of an optical fiber is tapered, and the light propagating in a core having a slendered leading end and reflected on the tapered surface is made incident to the thin film line disposed with orthogonal intersection with the optical fiber. CONSTITUTION:The core glass 44 at the leading end of an optical fiber is slendered and the leading end of the optical fiber is tapered 45. If the end face of a thin film line 42 is disposed near the condensing point of the light propagated in the core 44 and reflected by the tapered surface 45, the light is coupled in high efficiency. To slender the leading end part of the core, an optical fiber 69 is sandwiched by glass rods 66, 67 of about the same outside diameter as that of said fiber and the same quality, and the fiber is pulled under heating. The rods 66, 67 and the clad 69 are united as one body, and the outside circumference near the center, that is, C-C line, is a circular. Core glass 64 is made to a slender shape. Thereby, the light is coupled easily in high efficiency.
