Abstract

PURPOSE: To facilitate production by bonding optical fibers having been removed of clads to themselves by way of a high refractive index transparent material.
CONSTITUTION: The core 5 of an input optical fiber having been removed of clad 6 and the core 9 of an output optical fiber having been removed of clad 10 are bonded by way of a transparent material 8 which has a refractive index higher than that of the core 5 of the input optical fiber. Then, the ray 7 having propagated in the core 5 by repeating total reflection at the interface with the clad 6 does not leak to the outisde at the portion where the clad 6 has been removed because the refractive index of the air is smaller than the refractive index of the clad 6, thus part of it transmits through the high refractive index transparent material 8 and enters the core 9, whereby it is branched. Hence, the device may be produced without requiring high precision for alignment and may be divided to arbitrary numbers
