Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a low-loss, inexpensive and small-sized optical directional coupler which has excellent reproducibility by forming the tip of each optical fiber in an input optical fiber group and an output optical fiber group in a circular cone shape, and by coupling both the groups while the tips are facing mutually. CONSTITUTION:Tip parts 11a and 12a, and 13a and 14a of input-side optical fibers 11 and 12, and output-side optical fibers 13 and 14 are made circularly conic by chemical etching, etc,; and exposed core parts 11c and 12c, and 13c and 14c are faced to each other and coupled adjacently, and the coupling part is covered with glycerol having refractivity similar to those of the core parts 11c-14c. For example, signal light traveling in the input-side optical fiber 11 reaches the output-side optical fibers 13 and 14. Consequently, a low-loss, inexpensive and small-sized optical directional coupler which has excellent reproducibility is obtained.
