Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce the captioned casting of superior strength and toughness in a short time by pouring the Al-Si-Cu-(Mg)-base alloy containing a small amount of Sb, performing intermediate high-temperature holding after the completion of freezing thence performing hardening followed by artificial aging.
CONSTITUTION: The Al-Si-Cu-base- or Al-Si-Cu-Mg-base alloy molten metal containing Sb; 0.03W1.0% is poured in a metal mold. Before the temperature of the casting after the completion of freezing lowers down to 450°C or less, the casting is put in a heating furnace which is ketp at 480W530°C. After it is subjected to intermediate high-temperature holding within about 2hr in the same temperature range in the heating furnace, it is hardened in warm water, thence it is subjected to artificial aging of about 1hrW12hr at temperature of 140W230°C. According to this method, the casting having the strength, toughness and thermal impact resistance equivalent to or superior to those of conventional castings may be produced in a short time.
