Abstract

[Also in Division C3] In a method of casting alloys containing carbon the mould material includes a protective substance which may be a silicide or a mixture of silicides, to prevent de-carburization and pitting of the surface of the casting due to oxygen infiltration through the mould during cooling, the protective substance being able to combine chemically with oxygen during cooling of the casting at mould temperatures above the firing temperature of the mould and having a melting point which is below the pouring temperature of the alloy but above the firing temperature of the mould. In an example described the mould material comprises 250 Kg. of fire clay mixed with 25 Kg. of refractory cement and the protective substance in the form of 25 Kg. of calcium silicide is added. The mould is fired at about 900‹ C. which destroys a wax pattern therein and a 13% chromium steel is poured into the finished mould at a temperature of 1600‹ C., the melting point of the calcium silicide being about 1220‹ C. In another example a mould composition is prepared from a solution of five litres of ethyl-silicate, 2À5 litres of alcohol, 0À25 litres of water, 5 c.c. of 32% hydrochloric acid and 18 Kg. of zirconium flour. An urea pattern is successively dipped in the solution to build up coats on the pattern and the protective substance in the form of a powdered aluminium silicon alloy is sprinkled on between coats. The mould is air hardened, placed in a bath to dissolve the urea pattern, fired at 900‹ C. and then filled with a carbon steel at a temperature of 1600‹ C. The melting point of the aluminium silicon alloy was 1100‹C . and the alloy contained 0À8% C, 33% Si, 48% Al, 3% Ti and 13% Fe.
