Abstract

PURPOSE: To make forging of a metal material forging of poor hot workability easy by pouring a metal material of poor hot workability into a mold made of steel plates, covering the upper and lower parts thereof by steel plates after freezing then subjecting the same to heating and forging.
CONSTITUTION: A mold 1 made of steel plates is set on the bed plate 4 on a molding board 5 provided with a cross gate 6, and a head heat-insulating plate 3 is disposed in the upper part of its inside surface. Metal of poor hot workability such as high alloy steel or special alloy is cast through the cross gate 6 by bottom pouring from a pouring pipe 7. In this case, the thickness of the steel plate 1 for the mold is suitably selected depending upon the static pressure and temperature of the molten metal 2 to be cast and the shape of the mold 1 is made into a shape close to the one resembling to a forged shape. When the cast metal has frozen, it is cut from the bottom and the bottom and head of the cast ingot 9 are covered by steel plates 8, 8 which are then welded to the mold steel plate 1. Next, the ingot is heated to its forging temperature and is forged. The cast ingot 9 to be forged causes less temperature drop owing to the presence of the steel plates 1, 8 of the surroundings and permits long-time forging; in addition, the surface of the cast ingot 9 is less cracked.
