Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a D-α-amino acid useful as a raw material of pharmaceuticals, in high efficiency, by hydrolyzing a 5-substituted hydantoin with Pseudomonas hydantoinophilum.
CONSTITUTION: A variant of Psuedomonas hydantoinophilum capable of converting a 5-substituted hydantoin to a D-α-amino acid, e.g. Pseudomonas hydantoinophilum AJ 11220 (FERM-P No.4347), is cultured in a medium containing the 5-substituted hydantoin, or contacting the cells of the bacteria or its treated product with the 5- substituted hydantoin in an aqueous solution. The culturing is carried out under aerobical conditions, at 25-40°C and pH4-8 for about 10 days; and reaction with the bacterial cells, etc., is conducted by keeping the suspension of the cells, etc. to 10- 70°C.
