Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare L-tryptophan at a low cost industrially, by reacting indole with α-acetamidoacrylic acid in the presence of acylase and a culture of specific microorganisms.
CONSTITUTION: Microorganisms, e.g. Proteus vulgaris IFO3167, Escherichia coli IAM1268, or Aerobacter aerogenes IFO1268, which belong to the genus Proteus, Escherichia, Aerobacter, Klebsiella, or Bacillus, and have the ability to produce L-tryptophan from indole and α-acetamidoacrylic acid in the presence of acylase, are cultured in a nutrient medium. The resulting culture, live bacterium bodies collected therefrom, or treated bodies are reacted with α-acetamidoacrylic acid (A) in an aqueous solvent wherein acylase, indole, and A are dissolved or suspended.
