Abstract

PURPOSE: To increase the production rate of D-N-carbamoylphenylglycine in the stereospecific hydrolysis of 5-phenylhydantion with speicific bacteria, by adding divalent Fe, Co or Mn compound to the reaction system.
CONSTITUTION: Bacteria capable of stereospecifically hydrolyzing 5-phenylhydantoin to D-N-carbamoylphenylglycine, e.g. Pseudomonas striata IFO 12996, are cultured. The cultured product, bacterial cells, or treated cells, are added together with 5-phenylhidantion (conveniently DL-isomer) to an aqueous solution containing di-valent Fe, Co or Mn salt, and mede to react at 20-85°C pref. 30-40°C, to obtain D-N-carbamoylphenylglycine. The concentration of the metal salt is about 0.02-5 mM, pref. ≥0.05mM
