Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound useful as an intermediate for pigments in a high yield, by dissolving a slurry of a reaction mixture between β-hydroxy- naphthoic acid and urea in water with an alkali, followed by agitating the filtrate of the solution after the addition of an acid.
CONSTITUTION: β-Hydrozynaphthoic acid is reacted with an excess of urea at a temperature above the melting point of the urea to give a reaction mixture, which is, in a molten state, mixed with water to form a slurry at 20°C or below. The slurry is then mixed with an equimolar amount or more based on the objective compound contained in the solid content of the slurry of caustic alkali, e.g. caustic soda, etc. to dissolve the solid content. The mixture is then filtered, and the resulting aqueous solution of alkali is incorporated with an acid, e.g. hydrochloric acid, etc. at pH≥10, to deposit crystals of the objective compound. The slurry thus obtained is heated to 30W60°C, agitated and filtered to afford the desired compound.
EFFECT: The compound of ≥95% purity can be obtained in a high yield.
