Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce 2,3-dialdehydoholocellulose in high purity, by a method wherein wastepaper is oxidized with periodic acid (or alkali method salt), and the desired product is extracted with water.
CONSTITUTION: Water is added to chopped wastepaper in an amount ranging 20W40 times by volume of the wastepaper. The mixt. is stirred at 50°C until a slurry is formed. Periodic acid or alkali metal salt thereof, such as sodium metaperiodate, is added to the slurry in such a proportion as to give a concn. of 0.20W 0.25M in the reaction solution. After the completion of oxidation with periodic acid, solid is filtered off. The solid is washed with water and methanol, and dried under vacuum to obtain fibrous material which is then suspended in water in an amount ranging 30W100 times by volume of the fibrous material. The suspension is heated under reflux for 1W5hr. Insoluble matter is filtered. Filtrate is dried to obtain 2,3-dialdehydoholocellulose.
