Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the title compound useful as an intermediate of a cationic dye, in high yield, using a small amount of water, by reacting a naphthalimide derivative purified by the alkali dissolution and cooling crystallization, with a hypochlorite.
CONSTITUTION: Naphthalimide or its derivative is dissolved in an caustic alkali solution at ≥40°C, pref. at 50W90°C, and cooled to crystallize. The purified naphthalimide is reacted with a hypochlorite at 10W30°C, pref. 15W25°C, in the presence of NaOH and KOH, to afford the objective compound. The molar ratio of NaOH to KOH is 9:1W2:8, pref. 8:2W5:5.
