Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a satin finished surface having bright white color and assuming a bright gray color near white on being anodized, by mechanically roughening the surface of Al or its alloy, followed by etching with a soln. contg. hydrofluoric acid and nitric acid. CONSTITUTION:The surface of Al or its alloy is mechanically roughened using #20-500 glass beads or emery as abrasives by rotary wheel brushing, sand lasting, liquid honing or impeller, and then etched with a hydrofluoric acid soln. contg. HF; 5-30wt% or soln. contg. HF; 5-30wt% and HNO3<=35wt% at room or elevated temp. By this treatment a lusterless brightly white surface with a reflectivity less than 20% can be obtd. When the surface is further anodized, a satin finished surface is obtd. assuming a bright gray color near white and having superior corrosion resistance.
