Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain uniform and colorful coloring without any colored mottle and having excellent luster by pickling a valve metal having coarse crystal grains with an aq. mixed soln. of hydrofluoric acid and a chelating agent having a specified concn., and then anodizing the metal. CONSTITUTION:The crystal grains of a valve metal such as Ti, Ta, Zr, and their alloy are coarsened by vacuum annealing, etc. When the valve metal having the coarse crystal grains is to be anodized, the valve metal is pickled with an aq. mixed soln. contg. 0.05-10wt.% hydrofluoric acid and >=0.2wt.% chelating agent as the pretreatment. Hydrogen peroxide, tartaric acid, oxalic acid, citric acid, EDTA, etc., are used as the chelating agent. The valve metal can be successively treated, if necessary, with dil. sulfuric acid and dil. hydrofluoric acid before pickling to preferentially etch the crystal grain. The oxide film on the valve metal surface is removed by the pickling, the activated surface is stabilized, and an oxide film can be formed by the succeeding anodization.
