Abstract

A method of finishing an aluminium surface which has had a porous oxide layer formed and sealed, characterized by the step of corroding said sealed oxide layer to produce a finish having a non-metallic appearance. The corrosion may be effected by strong or weak acids or alkalis. The sealing may be effected by an alkali silicate; an acetate; sodium molybdate, nitrate or dichromate or ferric ammonium oxolate. The corroding step may be followed by a further sealing step. The method may also include preliminary etching or polishing steps, a dyeing step, and a smut removing step. The finished surface has a non-metallic appearance.
