Abstract

PURPOSE: To separate incident light to plural wavelength components, make possible their respectively independent modulation, simplify the constitution of the optical systems and obtain a high modulation speed by arraying electrodes on a crystal sequentially in the propagation direction of light and using a single light modulator.
CONSTITUTION: The modulator comprises providing electrodes 11 thru 13 having period structures respectively varying in the transmission direction of light on a crystal 1 which exhibits the electro-optic effect causing the rotation of the main axis of the refractive index ellipsoid of the crystal, providing means 21 thru 23 for applying modulating signals to these electrodes and further subsequently arraying the regions provided with the electrodes 11 thru 13 in the propagation direction of light. Modulation is accomplished independently by applying periodic electric fields in the transmission direction of light and dividing incident light 2 to plural wavelength components. On the other hand, the multiple signal transmitter comprises providing optical systems 31, 32 on the exit side of a light source 30 having emission spectra of more than 100 Å in half- amplitude level, providing a light wavelength separating modulator 33 on the exit side thereof and providing optical systems 37, 38 for leading the wavelength multiple signals to a light transmission path 39 on the exit side of the modulator.
