Abstract

PURPOSE:To attain high performance of wavelength multiplex coherent optical fiber communication by using a light intensity limiter so as to eliminate the intensity fluctuation of the light subject to phase or frequency modulation so as to prevent the production of phase crosstalk. CONSTITUTION:A light intensity limiter 14 consists of a light intensity modulator 141 controlling the light intensity and a part controlling the modulator 141. Since high speed is required for the light intensity modulator 141, a travelling waveform using a lithium iobate the same as an optical phase modulator 13 is used, but since the intensity modulation is applied, the system controlling the coupling coefficient of two adjacent waveguide paths on the lithium iobate is adopted. Then the light subject to intensity modulation by the optical phase modulator 13 is corrected to have a constant intensity by a light intensity limiter 14. Thus, the phase crosstalk in the wavelength multiplex coherent optical fiber communication is remarkably relaxed and multi-channel and long range optical fiber communication are attained.
