Abstract
PURPOSE: To simplify the optical system before and after the modulator, by opposedly providing the light entrance plane of the crystal which becomes the ultrasonic propagation medium and the light exit plane of diffracted light at a specified angle, and entering the incident light into the crystal under specified entering condition, and setting the incident light and diffracted light parallel to each other.
CONSTITUTION: The shape of a crystal 1b which becomes the ultrasonic propagation medium is designed in trapezoidal form. A modulation signal input 3 is transformed to an ultrasonic wave by a transducer 2, and part of incident light 5 is turned to diffracted light 6, while the other part becomes a non-diffracted light 7. At this time, supposing the incident angle to be α, angle of refraction to be β, angle of deflection to be θ, angle to determine the trapezoidal form to be ψ, and refractive index of crystal to be n, the entering condition and shape of crystal 1b are specified to satisfy the formula (3) and formula (4), respectively.
