CONSTITUTION:An optical function eement consists of a medium 1 which has the nonlinearity of absorption and/or dispersion to the quantity of incident light, an optical resonator 2 which includes the nonlinear medium 1, and two kinds of laser beams 3 and 4 which are incident from the direction of the optical axis of the optical resonator 2 and have different frequencies, and the transmission characteristics of the optical resonator for one laser beam 3 are controlled by the other laser beam 4. To obtain the incidence-transmission characteristics of signal light 3 as one laser beam of this system, absorption and separation caused on the nonlinear medium 1 by the presence of the signal light 3 and control light 4 in the optical resonator 2 are found firstly, and the incidence-transmission characteristics of the optical resonators 2a and 2b including the nonlinear medium 1 are found secondary; and the induced polarization (complex refractive index) of the nonlinear medium 1 found in the former stage is used for the incidence-transmission characteristics of the latter stage.
