Abstract
PURPOSE:To miniaturize the titled switch and to decrease the insertion loss, by placing an optical waveguide for coupling which has been constituted of a material whose optical loss is smaller than that of an optical switch part, between the optical switch part and an optical fiber for coupling. CONSTITUTION:As for a switch part for switching a light beam, an electrooptical crystal such as lithium niobate, etc., whose induced refractive index variation by external force is large, or a compound semiconductor crystal such as gallium arsenide, indium phosphorus, etc., is used, and as for a bend waveguide part for coupling with an optical fiber, a quartz compound glass material whose loss is low is used. In such a way, by constituting the optical switch part and the bend waveguide part, of each different material, the structure of each optical waveguide can be designed and manufactured optimumly. According to this constitution, the number of connecting parts between parts increase by one part, but since the quartz glass compound optical waveguide and the quartz compound optical fiber can be coupled with an extremely small loss by a welding method, no problem is generated at all for practical use.
