Abstract
PURPOSE:To provide an optical fiber and an optical waveguide component with an optical modulating function without spoiling their basic shapes by using glass to which semiconductor microcrystal of <=1,000Angstrom in grain size and providing electrodes which apply an electric field into the glass. CONSTITUTION:The glass to which the semiconductor microcrystal is added and the electrodes 2 and 2' which apply the electric field into the glass are provided. For example, glass wherein the semiconductor microcrystal is added to at least either of the core part 3 and clad part 1 of the glass-made optical waveguide or glass-made optical fiber consisting of a core part 3 with a relatively high refractive index and a clad part 1 at its periphery with a relatively low refractive index is used. Consequently, the glass waveguide itself is provided with the function of a modulator.
