Abstract

PURPOSE: To change over the incident light signals in a simple device constitution to enable emission, by changing over the optical path directly due to the electro-optical effect.
CONSTITUTION: Lights from optical fibers 1 and 2 enter a single crystal 7 which possesses double refraction effect through polarizers 5 and 6, respectively, and emitted as a single light combined at the single crystal 7 to be supplied into an electro- optical element for converting the plane of polarization 9. In the element 9, the plane of polarization is rotated by 90 degrees by the voltage applied to electrodes 11, 12 to enter the single crystal 8. In the single crystal 8, two lights are separated at the emission end due to the double refraction effect, and are respectively sent into optical fibers 3 and 4. By changing the voltage applied to the element 9, the optical path can be changed over to the optical fiber 3 or to 4.
