Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a perfect-operation optical switch that permits nearyl 100% incident light to pass through liquid crystal, by providing a prism, lens, half- wavelength plate, glass plate, and anisotropic crystal. CONSTITUTION:Parallel light passed through rod lens 21 is separated through anisotropic crystal 71 into polarized light P parallel to a paper face and perpendicular polarized light and polarized light S is converted by half-wavelength plate 81 into polarized light P, which strikes prism 31. On the other hand, polarized light P, having its optical path bent by anisotropic crystal 71, is incident to prism 31 by way of glass plate 91. Thus, polarized light of light incident to prism 31 all becomes polarized light P. While no voltage is applied to clear electrode 5, the light incident to liquid crystal 4 is totallt reflected. Then, polarized light P having passed through half-wavelength plate 81 and polarized light P having passed through glass plate 91 are both led to multimode optical fiber I3 and almost all incident light from multimode optical fiber I1 is taken out of optical fiber I3. Once a voltage is applied, it is led out of optical fiber I4.
