Abstract
PURPOSE:To realize high-speed switching, long life and low-voltage drive by using as a shutter element an electrooptical material substrate which has a couple of comb-tooth transparent electrodes on each surface. CONSTITUTION:On both surfaces of an electrooptical material substrate 131 of PLZT, etc., transparent electrodes 132 and 133, and 134 and 135 are opposed so that their comb-tooth electrodes engage with each other alternately in a certain direction in a manner of W>=d; and the comb-tooth electrodes on one surface are positioned between those on the other. Further, this shutter element is so arranged that an electric field by those electrodes has 45 deg. to the plane of polarization of incident light. Consequently, the light incident to the element is transmitted by being rotated optically by 90 deg., so this element 13 is used in combination with right-angled prisms 11 and 12 and polarizing prisms 9 and 10, thus constituting an optical switch.
