Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain high transmittivity by a low applied voltage by providing arrayed or comb-tooth-shaped transparent electrodes on both surfaces of an electrooptical material substrate arranged between two polarizing elements. CONSTITUTION:On both surfaces of an electrooptical material substrate of PLLT, etc., arranged between two polarizing elements 6 and 7 whose directions of polarization are at right angles to each other, mutually engaging comb-tooth transparent electrodes 9 (15-18) are provided; the width of each electrode is greater than an interval between the electrodes, and the electrodes 15 and 16 on the top surface are positioned between the electrodes 17 and 18 on the reverse surface. Then, a voltage is applied from a power source 5 between the electrodes on the top and reverse surfaces of the substrate through lead lines 10 to establish an electric field between the electrodes, and this electric field causes pieces of luminous flux of a horizontal and a vertical polarized component to have a phase shift in the electric field direction of a light beam incident to the substrate 2, so that some of components of the light beam are transmitted through the polarizing element 7.
