Abstract

Then, a voltage is applied from a power source 5 between the electrodes on the top and reverse surfaces of the substrate through lead lines 10 to establish an electric field between the electrodes, and this electric field causes pieces of luminous flux of a horizontal and a vertical polarized component to have a phase shift in the electric field direction of a light beam incident to the substrate 2, so that some of components of the light beam are transmitted through the polarizing element 7.
