Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain an optical circulator independent of the polarization of incident light by separating light into linear polarizations having polarizing faces perpendicular to each other and carrying out processing. CONSTITUTION:Light emitted from optical fiber 11 passes through lens 15 and is separated into P polarization parallel to the incident face and S polarization perpendicular to it with polarizing and separating element 19. The P polarization is transmitted, and the S polarization is reflected. The polarizing face of the P polarization is then rotated with Faraday effect element 21 and 45 deg.C optical rotation element 22 by 45 deg.C each, that is, 90 deg.C, and the polarization is reflected by polarizing and separating element 20 toward optical fiber 12 as S polarization. The polarizing face of said S polarization is also rotated by 90 deg.C with elements 21, 22, and the polarization enters fiber 12 as P polarization to element 20. On the other hand, light emerging from fiber 12 is not polarized and rotated with elements 22, 21 and couples with optical fiber 13.
