Abstract

PURPOSE:To achieve a display panel aving greater contrast and excellent display quality, by almost making coincident with the direction of optical main axis having the largest light transmissivity of a double refraction substrate and the direction of polarized axis of a polarized plate in contact with the substrate. CONSTITUTION:A light transmitted from a polarized plate 3a is made incident to a biaxially oriented PET film 1 at an incident angle phi and is transmitted through it, and the light transmitted through a polarized plate 3b is detected at photodetector 5. The angle between the direction of one optical main axis a1-a'1 of the film 1 and the direction of the polarized axis of the plates 3a, 3b is taken as an angle phi. For example, when the incident angle theta is taken as 40 deg., and the dependency of amount of light transmission to the angle theta between the direction of polarized axes 4a, 4b and the main axis a1-a'1 is measured at the detector 5, dicontinuity of amount of light transmission is caused at the region of about + or -20 deg. by clipping optical main axia a2-a'2 and the amount of light transmission is 20-80% in comparison with the amount around the main axis a1-a'1. Thus, the optical main axis a1-a'1 has the maximum light transmissivity.
