Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce loss of light by disposing a crystal having specific electro-optic effect between two calcites and improve quenching ratio characteristics and facilitate production without including any special process by using only the optical crystal being a simple substance.
CONSTITUTION: When the incident light of an optical fiber enters a calcite 22 via selfoc lens 27, it is divided to a normal ray 27 and an anomalous ray 29. The ray 28 having gone through a monocrystalline plate 24 of Bi12SiO20 which is applied with a transparent electrode 25 on (100) face goes straightforward directly through a calcite 23 having the same inclination of optical axis 16 as that of the calcite 22 and is radiated by becoming a ray 30. On the other hand, the ray 29 becomes the anomalous ray even in the calcite 23, advances diagonally upward and is reflected as a ray 31. When a half wavelength voltage is applied from a power source 34 to the plate 24, the plane of polarization of the ray 28 rotates 90° and becomes an anomalous ray 34 in the calcite 23. On the other hand, the ray 29 becomes an anomalous ray 35 and the rays 34, 35 enter the selfoc lens 32 and are led to an optical fiber 33.
