Abstract

PURPOSE: To enable light reflection or light transmission to be controlled as desired by using a material which permits refractive index control through electric field and controlling the degree of the refractive index matching with the adjoining transparent material by an electric field.
CONSTITUTION: Transparent electrodes 3, 4 are provided to transparent support plates 1, 2. The (n) type nematic liquid crystal 9 whose refractive index to normal rays nearly coincides with the refractive indices of the support pltes 1, 2 is beforehand quasi-perpendicularly oriented with an inclination in a fixed direction by orientation treatment layers 5, 6a, 6b.
