Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a modulator having no transmission loss, by passing two kinds of polarized light of the incident light into the electro-optical crystals for modulation, which are identical in shape, provided in parallel disposition between common double refraction crystals provided in the light entering part and light emitting part.
CONSTITUTION: The incident light is transformed into two kinds of straight polarized light by a double refraction crystal 9, and passes into electro-optical crystals 10, 11, which are identical in shape and arranged in parallel disposition, to be light power-modulated according to the voltages applied to the crystals 10, 11. Thus modulated elliptical polarized light becomes a straight polarized wave light which is orthogonal or parallel to the incident light into the crystals 10, 11, and is taken out as a modulated wave synthesized by the double refraction crystal 16, or a modulated light separated by it. In these all cases, since analyzer is not needed, the transmission loss does not depend on the state of polarization of the incident light, so that a multimode power optical modulator without transmission loss may be obtained.
