Abstract

PURPOSE:To hold a stationary optical output which is free of variation in the quantity of light for a long time by arranging electrodes which have equal periods in a light transmission direction on crystal which has prescribed electrooptical effect, and applying out-of-phase AC voltages, etc., to respective electrodes. CONSTITUTION:On X-plate LiTaO3 crystal 1 formed so that light is transmitted in the direction of an Y axis, an interdigital electrode consists of comb-shaped electrodes 2 and 3 cascaded at a period A in the Y-axis direction, and a comb- shaped electrode 4 intertwined with them. When a voltage is applied between the comb-shaped electrodes 4 and 2, or 3 in an optical modulator, electric fields in directions +X and -X are established alternately in the direction Y at the period A, and incident light 7 becomes emitted light 9. A rectangular wave voltage is applied to the electrode 2, and a rectangular wave voltage having the same amplitude and pi out of phase with said voltage is applied to the electrode 3. Therefore, the voltages are applied to the electrodes 2 and 3 alternately to equalize conversion efficiency at points t1, t2 and t3 of time, thus obtaining a constant optical output. Consequently, the stationary optical output is held for a long period.
