Abstract
1511334 Controlling light XEROX CORP OF XEROX SQUARE 19 May 1975 21105/75 Heading G2F A thin layer 21 of material with an electric field dependent refractive index is directly supported by a substate 20 and is subjected to a periodic field produced between interdigitated electrodes 22 adjacent one surface thereof to provide a phase diffraction grating for the deflection of a light beam propagating generally parallel to the electrodes 22 and totally internally reflected at the one surface of the layer 21. Variation of the field intensity changes the intensities of the diffracted and undiffracted beams, one of which may be selected by the use of optical stops. Because of the limited penetration of the electric field into layer 21 (effectively half the electrode pitch), the latter may be very thin e.g. 10-20Á, although in practice 50-200Á may be used. It may be vacuum deposited, grown as a crystal, or cemented, in the substrate. In a second embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown) the incident and diffracted beams enter and leave substate 20 through inclined end-faces. Layer 21 may be of LiNbO 3 ; LiTaO 3 ; KTN; ADP; KDP; KD*P; or Ba 2 NaNb 5 O 15 .
