Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain an optical switch which is operated by low voltage, by providing 1 group or 2 groups of a pair of electrodes on a cross area of a cross waveguide by which an incident light beam formed on an electric optical crystal is wave-directed to the branch side. CONSTITUTION:Cross waveguides 1, 2 having 10mum width, 4mum depth and 2 deg. cross angle are formed by vapor-depositing Ti on an LiNbO3 substrate and executing its thermal diffusion, and Al electrodes 8, 8' and 9, 9' are provided along a main line 1. A distance between the electrodes is set to 4mum, and when voltage of several V - several tens of V is applied, the wave direction to the side of a branch line 2 is obstructed and the wave direction is executed to the main line 1, due to a variation of the refractive index. In this way, an optical switch which is operated by low voltage is obtained.
